The Dripped On The Road October 2019 Program featured resident artists Valeriya Volkova (Philadelphia, PA) and Caitlin McDonagh (Montreal, Canada). The program was a three week epic that it visited three cities and camped in 4 state parks in Virginia and Pennsylvania. The program began in Brooklyn, NY and travelled to the Talking Walls Festival in Charlotte, NC.
Dripped on the Road also hosted two artist talks in Charlotte for the festival and in Bethlehem for Lehigh University.
Brooklyn, NY
October 7th-12th
Brooklyn in the house!
The Fall 2019 program started off in Brooklyn with the residents staying at the NY Moore Hostel, a short 10 minute walk from the residents' mural walls. This was both resident artists Caitlin McDonagh & Velriya Volkova's first time painting murals in New York.
Program partner Brooklyn Brewery hosted the program to to taste some delicious beers and pick some up for the road!
During the week, Director Denton hosted a DOTR meet and greet at his apartment in Manhattan with both the current residents adn alumni who live in New York... the crew also painted the rooftop.
Brooklyn was an amazing start to the 2019 program. The residents created unique murals in the heart of Brooklyn!
White Oak Campground, PA
October 13th-15th
White Oak Campground was an amazing place to stay!
The group camped for two days, cooked some unbelievable meals and went skateboarding. The crew was surrounded by beautiful lakes, mountains and forests. The drone even got attacked by a large great blue heron who appeared out of the... blue... but our pilot was able to retreat and land with out incidence. Unreal.
After camping and on the way down to Charlotte, the program stopped in Clifton Forge, VA for a fun day exploring thrift shops and the local C&O freight train museum.
Charlotte, NC
October 15th-21st
The group landed in Charlotte for the Talking Walls Mural Festival. Once again, the crew stayed in the backyard of Ink Floyd, a famous screen printing workshop located in the NODA district. Most of the group slept in the cozy RV while directors Jonathan and Ramiro stayed in tents.
Both Caitlin and Valeriya painted their largest murals in Charlotte, with assistance from the program directors to make sure they were completed in the time-frame. Caitlin painted in Uptown (also known as Downtown) Charlotte, loving her time on the lift. It was tricky getting the lift through morning traffic and into/out of the small alleyway, but Jonathan and Denton maneuvered professionally and enjoyed the challenge. Caitlin painted her wall in just 4 days and it turned out stunning!
Valeriya painted on the other side of town on a building next to Moo and Brew... one of the best burgers in town. Valeriya painted the wall in just 3 full days with assistance from Ramiro. The location was previously a juice spot that was transitioning into a new business.
On Saturday night, the directors hosted a guest lecture at Optimist Hall about the program and public art. Ramiro painted a quick mural for the lecture's backdrop. The turnout was great and fun was had by all.
Overall, the festival was a huge success with so many murals going up all at once.
We just want to thank everyone down at Talking Walls that hosted the team.....you guys were amazing.
Bethlehem, PA
October 22nd-23rd
The 2019 Program's final stop was Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
The team hosted an artist talk for the fine art majors and was able to drive the RV into the workshop area to be used as the backdrop. At the end, DOTR invited the students into the RV for a tour.
That night the crew stayed with famous artist, former Lehigh Professor and amazing human, Berrisford Boothe. Berris provided the group with an authentic Jamaican meal that blew everyone away. It's always a treat to stop by Berris' home, full of beautiful art, food and conversations. A true gift to the crew.
Thank you so much Berris for your hospitality, you are an epic man.
